Festive Flash Fiction Day Three: The Confidential Case

The Confidential Case

When I opened the door, the guy who’d knocked held up a flyer.
Tess Trowel Investigations it read. We dig trouble.

“This you?”

I glanced at it. “Who’s asking?”

“It’s kinda… confidential,” he said. “Can I come in?”

He was a looker all right. Wore a white button-down and a pair of red jeans he’d been poured into like a fine wine. Châteauneuf-du-Va-Va-Voom.

I swung open the door. “What can I do for you, Mister…?”

“Caine. Abelford Caine. Heard you’re the best, and I need help.”

“I am the best.” I raised a sardonic eyebrow. “But — wait a minute. Your name’s Abelford Caine? As in — Abel Caine?”

“That’s right,” he said. “And I’m missing…”

“Don’t tell me.” I shifted my toothpick. “Your brother, right?”

He gave a low whistle. “You are good. My twin, actually. How’d you know that?”

“Wild guess.” I leaned against the wall. “Okay, pay up front and I’ll take the case.”

He slapped a chocolate orange on the desk. “There’s more where that came from,” he said.

Good enough for me.

“Tell me something about your brother,” I said. “He look like you?”

Caine gestured at his jeans. “He’s more into stripes.”

“Whatever. What’s his name?”

“Candleford.”

The light went on, and I jumped to my feet. I’d been peppermint-barking up the wrong seasonal fir.

Taking a bite of chocolate, I grinned at him. This was one sweet case.
I just needed to find me the right Candy Caine.

For the month of December, my goal is to post a piece of festive flash fiction here to the blog every day. Twenty-five stories, each 250 words or fewer — a little fictional festivity to brighten the darkest month of the year. For readers, I offer these stories as a moment of peace within a hectic month of busy. And writers? If you’d like to join me, I’ll feature any flash fiction you’d like to share!

PS I’m kinda in love with Tess Trowel at the moment. You may well see her again…

Festive Flash Fiction Day Two: The Bad Boy

small cracked bellThe Bad Boy

Basie likes being the bad boy.

Of course, it hasn’t always been this way. In school, he’d been a team player. Never a guy to glissando, of course, but — you know. He got along.

And then somewhere along the way…
Who’s he kidding?  Basie remembers the moment vividly.

It was a Sunday afternoon, of course. He’d been ringing with the others just like he always did. Carolling out now and again at that cute little Choral, who was brand new that year. (When he was younger, he’d really had it bad for Elegy, but — she’d become so moody lately. Choral was much cheerier, somehow.)

And then… it happened. He’d heard about it before, from one or two of the older chaps, but mostly they didn’t talk about it. Blushed. You know.

Near the end of practice he pealed out — and something broke. His perfect B — always a perfect B — came out … different.

The ringer paused. “Someone’s off,” he called, as the sound faded away. “Try again. B below middle C!”

Basie could have quit right there. He thought about it, to be frank. He rested a beat, bereft. Befuddled.

But then, in that very moment, something — something in him became.
There was no point in begrudging it. Instead, he embraced it.

So this is Basie’s life now. He can’t be anything else. Can’t be like before. He can’t… B at all.
Basie knows he might be a bell gone bad… but he can B-flat like a boss.

Antler annoyance

Today’s installment:

The Antler Annoyance

The antlers were the problem.
Eight teeny reindeer, all set to take to school. Rudolph with a red gumdrop for his nose. Ash tried cinnamon sticks, toothpicks and even stir-sticks from her mother’s coffee stash, but nothing worked. This whole seasonal mythology thing was a giant pain. No one believed in Santa anymore. Not in eighth grade.

Her teacher disagreed. We’re inclusive, she’d said. All beliefs welcome here.

So, when one of the boys had grabbed the manger scene, Santa seemed the obvious second choice. She’d picked the reindeer, ‘cause — duh. And only nine cookies, right?

But now Ash sat staring at the baking sheet, and the little google-y eyes stared right back, foreheads naked under the harsh kitchen lights.

What about cloves? her mum suggested. A pair of little brown cloves for each cookie. Then everyone will be able to ‘c’ the ‘love’ you’ve put into them. She near died laughing at that one.

Ash just frowned. You’ve forgotten, she said. It’s hard.

Look honey, her mum said. You need to quit being so gloomy all the time. It’s Christmas, for goodness sake. Try not to make everything such a big deal. Here — you can wear my hat to school. Holiday colours — red and green!

So in the end, that’s what she did. Cloves for the cookies. And the hat?

When she pulled it down low, you could hardly make out the two little nubbins sprouting out of her forehead.

Maybe her mum did remember, after all.

Goodreads closed the Tantor Audio Book giveaway on the 27th, but since I’ve been crawling out from under the #SiWC15 crazy this week, I haven’t had a time to announce it before now.

So — the lucky five American winners on Goodreads of a copy of FINDING FRASER in audio were: Christelle, Mikeo, Ann, Jessica and Erma. [Click through to see the actual post…]. And you WERE lucky, as there were 756 people entered in the draw!

I promised to open the draw to Canadian and International fans, too. In order to be eligible, you had to tweet or FB the link to the page, so … here we go!

The international winner posted the link on Facebook, is from Canberra [I believe!] and is <drumroll> Ursula O’Dea Brightman! Congratulations, Ursula! You’ll need to email me at kcdyer@shaw.ca and we’ll sort out shipping details, okay?

And finally, the Canadian winner of the audio book is Laura Scott [who tweets as @LScott02] who tweeted out her interest all the way from Ottawa. Laura, way to go! Email me at kcdyer@shaw.ca and we’ll get this prize to you asap.

FINDING FRASER in the wild…!

Fraser in the JungleGuys, guys…! The wait is OVAH!

I’m thrilled to say FINDING FRASER is finally available in other digital formats. Today, it was spotted for the first time, in the Kobo wilds at Chapters.Indigo.ca.

Editing this post to add — the story is now on Nook, too, right here at Barnes and Noble. Hooray! Thanks to all the readers alerting me to sightings in the wild!

I’ve had so many calls for this story to arrive in other formats, so I’m delighted this day is finally here.

I’m hoping you can help me out. If you find this story lurking in other jungles — like iTunes — let me know, okay? It’s been released for a few days now, so I’m happy to hear news of wilderness sightings in any setting.

And if you’ve been waiting to read the story on your Kobo or your Nook — go for it.
