#Project August Check-in #1

Whoah.

This is THE month to get stuff done.

Two of my dear friends… Lee Edward Fodi and Kallie George are both marrying their respective True Loves this month. Been a long time since I’ve had a two-wedding month, but I am excited to see them both setting off on this new chapter in their lives. Also? Both have them have Excellent Taste in Spouses, I have to say, so the whole thing is feeling very merry.

Speaking of new chapters, #ProjectAugust is in full swing! Thanks to all who have thrown their respective projects into the ring — hopefully this will help you find the motivation to get ‘er done!

If you haven’t joined #ProjectAugust yet…why not? Rules are simple; email me or sign up in the comments below with the following info:

Your name/nom de plume:

Your project goal:

Your email [so we can connect afterwards regarding any prizes you may have won]:

Your chosen title [’cause if you meet your goal, you win a book of your choice!]:

Easy, right?

Remember, it doesn’t have to be a writing project. You might be cleaning out a store room or reorganizing the family photos — whatever big project you’ve been meaning to tackle will qualify.

So grab your friends, and get them to sign up, too! Who doesn’t want to win a book?

Here’s who’s in so far:

Deniz B has THREE #ProjectAugust events lined up: submit a novella, edit a short story and start typing a draft of her latest novel ms. Go Deniz!

Shari G wants to complete the first draft of her middle grade verse novel. A worthy entry!

Deb A wants to finish ATM, her work-in-progress. This in spite of the fact she has to put together her daughter’s wedding, move AND do a Beta read. That’s what I like to see…Ambition! [Deb, you need to email me your desired read — we all need incentive, my friend!]

James Mc wants to make 20,000 words into his YA superhero novel. That’s 5000 words a week, James — go for it!

Bonnie N has a big list. She wants to write a 2-hour speech, outline and organize her lecture topics for eight weeks and two workshops, AND organize and complete her Indigogo campaign to launch her new book. Whew! A busy month for Bonnie!

Tyner G has joined but…I can’t find where you wrote down your goal. Can you email me again, Ty? You [of all people] need to stand up and be counted this year!

Lois P wants to get HER YA verse novel to the end of its second draft. [Man — TWO verse novels in the works here. How cool is THAT?]

Katherine W wants to complete the first 50,000 words of her steampunk alternate history first draft. Woo HOO!

Tricia B wants to complete the first draft of her novel. Send me your other deets by email, okay Tricia?

And Kathleen L? Your reno counts, too! Send me your other details by email and we’ll put you on the list!

And as for me, I’ve already got what I wanted for #ProjectAugust — company while I work to complete the first draft of my latest novel. But there is LOTS of room for more, so join in if you haven’t yet.

‘Cause… here’s something new!

I’m going to add a few small incentives as the month goes on, and here comes number one. I’m pretty excited about this one, ’cause it’s about helping other people. Here’s how it’s gonna work…

Check-in #2 will be next Saturday night, August 10th. I want you to set a small goal — a mini-goal within your project. Make it tough enough you’re going to have to work for it, but something that will leave you satisfied if it gets done. Okay? Now email me the goal, or note it in the comments below.

If you make the goal by the time we check in next Saturday night, I’m going to donate a book in your name HERE, to the Thistalah Memorial Library in Bella Bella. This library burned to the ground on July 12th, and they are trying to rebuild. You can learn more about it HERE. I’ve already set aside a bunch of brand-new books for them, and hope to make it an even bigger package with your participation.

So, come on — what are you waiting for? If you haven’t signed up for #ProjectAugust yet, now’s the time to do it. You can win books for yourself and help re-stock a library that is truly in need. And not only that — you can complete a project you’ve been meaning to finish.

Win…win…WIN!

Email or hit me in the comments asap with your mini-goal. And keep posting your successes to me on twitter @kcdyer. I RT every one! Let’s make this happen together!

More soon…

  1. Mini goal: MS currently at 86700 words. Shooting for 89000 by Saturday. And book? Oh, geez. So many good ones…tell you what, if I earn a reward, please choose and donate to the Bella Bella library restoration project on my behalf. :)Thanks!

  2. My name is J. Collyer and I am currently working on my first Sci-Fi novel. I have an official deadline of mid-October, by which time the draft needs to be done for the publisher. I find I am doing well keeping my productivity up but I thought joining in #ProjectAugust certainly couldn't hurt! My project goal is that by the end of August I would like to be approaching the final 'turn' in my novel (you know how most stories have 2 significant 'turns' where the plot changes direction/steps it up a notch? I am approaching my first one now, I hope I will have reached the second by the end of August. This will mean the draft will be two-thirds done)By next Saturday I hope to have finished the portion of the storyI am on now and have written or be ready to write the first turning point.

  3. Hey J.Collyer, Thanks for joining us! You've got it right — sometimes having a community of writers helps with the motivation, for sure. Both goals — maxi and mini — set. Don't forget to email me at author.kc.dyer@gmail.com with your email deets!~kc
