Autumn comes to Scotland

I’m hoping the season hasn’t made it’s way to Vancouver yet, but today it is mitten weather here in Stirling. Rain pelting down, leaves blowing off the trees…a dreich day, to be sure!

Have been here two weeks now, with one last week to stay before heading home. It’s been a wonderful time, revisiting favourite sites with my family, scaling castle walls and storming battlegrounds. Today was Stirling Bridge and Bannockburn — sites of two major Scots triumphs under the respective leadership of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. We’ve been to Edinburgh, Urquhart and Stirling Castles. We’ve stalked graveyards and ghosts, climbed monuments and cliff walls and spiral stairs and trekked and trained and travelled across as much of this beautiful country as we could manage.

We will wrap up our stay by watching the Scots lay a Viking longboat to waste by fire in the wee coastal town of Largs this weekend. In between, we’ve helped settle one offspring over here for school, weathered lost passports and missed flights, walked and hiked miles and eaten far too much good Scottish cooking.

Meanwhile, at home, the clock is ticking toward the 20th Surrey International Writers’ Conference. The contest for the conference closes the day after I return home, and entries are pouring in every day. If you have a story you think might win — there is still time to send it in, and at $15 per entry, the return is excellent — you could win $1000!

We’ll be talking about the contest on our first tweet-chat with Sean Cranbury today at 11:00 am PDT, so look for our #SiWC2012 hashtag and join in with questions or comments. Everything you wanted to know about writing contests — and then some! See you there…!

More soon…
